Phoenix Chroi is the spoken-word-and-bass duo of vocalist/poet Elaine McGinty and bassist Joe Buckley, founders of the former post-punk band of the same name. Their debut album Songs From The Last Five Years (2015) was acquired by the British Library as an important cultural work, followed by Humanity Lands (2017).
Their current performance is raw, uncompromising and grounded in lived experience—Elaine’s powerful vocals and poetry driven by Joe’s deep, atmospheric bass. Together they explore survival, resistance, and hope amid the systems that try to silence us.
Phoenix Chroi appear at gigs and festivals across the UK, and Elaine’s writing has been featured in multiple anthologies. Elaine and Joe are also founders of the community-led Phoenix Cultural Centre CIC and the Fiery Bird Live Music Venue in Woking.
